Leicester Square has special memories for me as it was the first place I remember visiting in London as a child. Back in 1977 my mum took me and my sister on a trip to book some tickets for the soon-to-be-release Star Wars (alas the tickets were not for us and we would have to wait until the film found its way to Watford before we could see it!).

I remember the square vividly as we sat and had a packed lunch on one of the park benches and the excitement as I took in what was the capital city of my country. Soon after this visit the square would earn some notoriety as the site for an overflow rubbish dump during the general strike of 1979.

My next memories of Leicester Square were as a student in the late 1980s. By then the centre of the square was boarded up for construction of an underground electricity substation and I would not see it as I remembered it from my childhood until many years later.

In this series of 16 images I limited myself to just one hour in the square with the aim of capturing the essence of the place. Monochrome suited my requirements as I wanted it to look as near as possible as I remembered it as a child - without the gaudy fast food and restaurant signs and ever present colours of street signage.
